Animator Glen Keane has a condition called aphantasia, which affects the mind’s ability to form mental images; as such, he has to rely on live-action reference to a greater extent than other animators. In order to bring Ariel to life, Keane had to study young Sherri Stoner in a skintight swimsuit as she swam around in a plexiglass tank for hours on end, day after day, over a period of many months. Glen Keane (* 13. April 1954 in Abington, Pennsylvania, USA) ist ein US-amerikanischer Trickfilmzeichner. Er arbeitet hauptsächlich am Character-Design und am Storyboard und hat zahlreiche Disney-Charaktere wie Arielle, Aladdin, Tarzan, das Biest und Pocahontas gestaltet und entwickelt. 1992 wurde er mit dem Annie Award für seine Charakter Animation ausgezeichnet. Ein weiterer Preis folgte im Jahr 2007 mit dem Winsor McCay Award. Besonders engagierte er sich bei der Produktion des CGI-Meisterwerks Rapunzel (2010), bei dem er die Charakter-Entwicklung und Konzept-Kunst besonders prägte. Ursprünglich sollte er 2009 auch die Regie des Märchen-Musicals führen, doch man entschied sich schließlich doch für den jüngeren Kurzfilmregisseur Nathan Greno.

2013 wurde er zur Disney Legend ernannt.

Glen Keane wurde am 13. April 1954 in Abington, Pennsylvania, in den USA als Sohn von Bil Keane und Thelma Keane, geb. Carne, geboren. Er hat drei Brüder, Neal, Jeff und Christopher, und eine Schwester, Gayle. Glens Vater, Bil Keane, war ein bekannter Zeichner von Zeitungsstrips, der bekannteste davon ist die Zeitungscartoon-Reihe „The Family Circus“, bei dem Bil Keane Inspiration in seiner eigenen Familie fand. Die Comicfigur Billy, einer der Söhne im Cartoon, basiert auf Glen. Glens jüngster Bruder Jeff Keane führte nach dem Tod ihres Vaters die Cartoonreihe fort. Während der langen Laufzeit des Zeitungs-Cartoons spielten sowohl Bil als auch Jeff Keane mehrfach an die Disney-Studios und den Beruf von Glen Keane an.

Er ist seit dem 3 August 1975 mit Linda Hesselroth verheiratet. Sie haben zwei Kinder, Max und Claire Keane.

Keane schrieb und illustrierte in den 1980er Jahren die christliche Kinderbuchreihe „Willi Waschbär“ (englisch „Adam Raccoon“), in der über Parabeln biblische Geschichten und Werte vermittelt werden. Titelfigur Willi repräsentiert in den Geschichten den ersten Menschen Adam und dementsprechend die ganze Menschheit, dessen Fehler und Charakterschwächen von König Leo (engl. King Aren) korrigiert werden, welcher in den Büchern Jesus repräsentiert. Auf Deutsch wurde die Buchreihe von Uta Müller übersetzt und erschien beim Hänssler-Verlag. In der Reihe erschienen „Willi Waschbär und der finstere Wald“ (engl. „Lost Woods“) als Parabel auf die Nachfolge Jesu, „Willi Waschbär und das große Fest“ (engl. „The King’s Big Dinner“) als Parabel auf die Nächstenliebe, „Willi Waschbär und der Wettlauf“ (engl. „Race to Victory Mountain“) als Parabel auf Ausdauer, „Willi Waschbär und der Riese“ (engl. „The Mighty Giant“) als Parabel darauf, Menschen von Jesus zu erzählen, „Willi Waschbär und die Flugmaschine“ (engl. „The Flying Machine“) als Parabel auf die Bibel und das Leben, „Willi Waschbär und der brausende Wasserfall“ (engl. „Forever Falls“) als Parabel auf die Rettung, „Willi Waschbär und der Zirkusdirektor“ (engl. „The Circus Master“) als Parabel auf Vergebung sowie die beiden nicht auf Deutsch veröffentlichten Bücher „The Big Shot Bear“ als Parabel auf Vertrauen und „Bully Garumph“.
