Big Little Books
Die Buchreihe Big Little Books (später Better Little Books) war der Name einer Reihe von kleinen, kompakten Hardcover-Büchern, die zwischen 1932 und 1942 von der Whitman Publishing Company herausgegeben wurden. Ein Big Little Book war in der Regel 92 mm breit und 110 mm hoch, umfasste 212 bis 432 Seiten und entsprach so einer ungefähren Dicke von 38 mm. Die Innenseiten haben auf der rechten Seite ganzseitige Schwarz-Weiß-Abbildungen abgedruckt, die dazugehörigen Textseiten sind auf der linken Seite.[1] Die einzelnen Ausgaben kosteten anfangs 10 Cent, der Preis stieg später auf 15 Cent.[2]
Die Geschichten und Figuren in den Better Little Books entstammen Filmen und Radiosendungen, meistens aber zuvor veröffentlichte Zeitungsstrips. Erreichte ein Zeitungsstrip eine bestimmte Bekanntheit, vergaben die Vertreiber Lizenzen zum Nachdruck der Reihe, bei der monatelange Strips in eine Handlung zusammengefasst und mit neuem Text versehen wurden. Oft mussten die Zeichnungen dem neuen Format angepasst und Sprechblasen entfernt werden.[3] Durch diese Änderungen wurden Comics, die sonst auf Zeitungspapier gedruckt wurden, durch einen Einband gesammelt und geschützt.[4]
Im Dezember 1932 erschien mit „The Adventures of Dick Tracy“ das erste Big Little Book. Andere Verlage wie zum Beispiel Saalfield Publishing übernahmen dieses Format, nachdem Whitman mit seinen ersten Titeln erfolgreich war. Beispiele für Buchreihen anderer Verlage nach demselben Konzept sind Cartoon Story Books und Fast-Action Stories von Dell, Five-Star Library Books von Engel-van Wiseman, Dime Action Books von Fawcett, Radio Star Series von Goldsmith, A Lynn Book von Lynn (natürlich), Little Big Books und Jumbo Books von Ottenheimer-Saalfield, Moby Books von Waldman, High Lights of History Series von World Syndicate sowie weitere Reihen.[5]
Nach einer Namensänderung in „Better Little Books“ im Jahr 1938 wurde die Reihe bis in die 1960er Jahre fortgesetzt.[2]
Während des zweiten Weltkriegs führte Whitman das flip-it-Daumenkino in einige Ausgaben ein.[5] Bei den Disney-Ausgaben gab es zum Beispiel zu „Mickey Mouse on Sky Island“ ein solches Daumenkino („with ‚movies‘ of Mickey... flip the pages and watch Mickey take a walk!“) sowie bei „Mickey Mouse and the Magic Lamp“ und „Mickey Mouse and the Dude Ranch Bandit“ (jeweils „with ‚movies‘ of Pluto... flip the pages and watch Mickey's dog Pluto in action!“).
Nach 1950 wurden die beiden neuen Reihen „New Better Little Books“ und „BLB TV Series“ bei Whitman eingeführt.[5]
